'Tear Down the Walls' Community Concert at the Levitt Shell
WHAT: More than one dozen congregations will unite for the fourth annual free & public Tear Down the Walls interfaith and multi-cultural community concert at the Levitt Shell at Overton on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 7 pm. Tear Down the Walls uses the power of music and spoken word to unite diverse communities for an evening of celebration and sharing, inspiring individuals get involved with local social action organizations in Memphis.
The scripted theatrical presentation combines music with spoken word by local religious leaders and human rights activists, featuring extraordinary national singer soloists as well as local choirs representing several churches and synagogues in Memphis. Many social action organizations will be on-site to inform audience attendees about ways to participate in their community-based efforts.
Partnering social action organizations in Memphis include the National Civil Rights Museum, Stax Academy, Bridges, Facing History and Ourselves, Jubilee Catholic School, Memphis Athletic Ministries, New Hope Christian Academy, The Soulsville Charter School, and Urban Youth Initiative.
Speakers include Dr. Craig Strickland (Hope Presbyterian Church), Dr. Frank Thomas (Mississippi Blvd.), Dr. Stacy Spencer (New Direction), Rick Kirchoff (Germantown Methodist Church), Rabbi Micah Greenstein (Temple Israel), The Most Reverend J. Terry Steiib (Bishop of Memphis), Rev. Andy MacBeth (Calvary Episcopal), Dr. Kenneth Robinson (St. Andrew AME Church), Dr. Brent Beasley (Second Baptist Church), Rev. Steve Montgomery (Idlewild Presbyterian Church), Rev. Johnny Jeffords (St. Johns United Methodist Church) and Dr. Scott Morris (Church Health Center of Memphis.)
"Music has a beautiful and powerful way of uniting communities, giving us a uniquely safe and positive foundation for developing new and ongoing relationships," says Rick Recht, event producer and top Jewish Rock recording artist. "We will not only inspire audiences through the powerful synergy of this community celebration, but will educate them about all the incredible work already being done by organizations in Memphis and ways to get involved."
