BRIDGES
BRIDGES has worked to improve the Memphis community for more than eight decades. BRIDGES programs serve more than 10,000 individuals in the Memphis area each year by providing experiential, hands-on learning for youth and adults to be leaders in fighting racism, poverty and educational challenges. The themes of experiential learning, diversity and individual and community responsibility are an integral part of all of BRIDGES programs, including Bridge Builders®, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Bridge Builders is a two-year, comprehensive leadership training program designed to promote communication, trust and understanding among a diverse group of youth. The program started in 1988 with students from two local schools, Northside and Briarcrest. Today Bridge Builders serves students from more than 50 area high schools, both public and private. For more information on activities planned to mark the program's 20th year and to learn more about all of BRIDGES programs , call 452-5600, visit our website at www.bridgesusa.org or stop by our booth tonight.

COMMON GROUND
What is Common Ground? Picture a room with about 10 ordinary residents sitting in a circle. It’s a truly diverse group of people. There are men and women, blacks, whites, Asians, Native Americans, Hispanics and other ethnic groups. They represent different religions, backgrounds and generations, and they have much in common. For six weeks, this small group of diverse people agree to meet at a regular time for two hours. Each week, they sit with a trained facilitator who leads an in-depth discussion on race relations. Through an Action Forum they will develop and implement specific recommendations on how to improve race relations in our community. http://commongroundmemphis.org/

FACING HISTORY AND OURSELVES
Facing History and Ourselves is a national educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.  By studying the historical development and lessons of the Holocaust and other examples of genocide, students make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives.  For more information and to learn how to get involved, please check out our website, www.facinghistory.org.

STAX MUSIC ACADEMY
The Stax Music Academy is a music education center located in Memphis, TN, adjacent to the original site of Stax Records, where the Stax Museum of American Soul Music now stands. Both the Academy and Museum are  part of a larger organization, the Soulsville Foundation, which consists of the Academy, Museum, and The Soulsville Charter School. The Soulsville Foundation was founded in the late 1990’s, when a group of former artists, concerned music lovers, and dedicated Memphis business leaders rallied to ensure that the legacy of Stax Records was not forever lost to history. This group recognized that they had an opportunity to make a genuine, lasting difference in the lives of the young people in the Soulsville, USA neighborhood (38106, 38126), which would ultimately benefit once these children matured into responsible, well educated community leaders. The Stax Music Academy was developed to meet this need for a high-quality, affordable, music education resource.

The Academy’s mission is to provide music education and unique performance opportunities to inspire primarily the young people of Soulsville, USA to enhance their academic and leadership skills and to become facilitators for community change. The Academy’s first course offering in 2000 was the SNAP! Summer Music Camp (SMC), which quickly became the its signature program, serving 225 students each summer.  In 2002, the 27,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art Academy building opened. The new facility included classrooms, a lecture hall, rehearsal rooms, choir and orchestra suites, and a recording studio. The Academy has since grown its programming to serve Memphis area youth with music instruction, workshops, various musical ensembles, and unique performance opportunities, in addition to mentoring youth personally, academically and musically. Its vision is rooted in the belief that music can positively shape young people and instill in them values and skills that will serve them throughout the rest of their lives.http://www.staxmusicacademy.org/
